Wedge Wire Collector/Distributor Systems--Effective Distribution and Collection
Wedge wire collector/distributor systems are critical components in a wide array of water and wastewater treatment processes, including ion exchange units, media filters, sand filters, carbon vessels, and clay filters.
Collector/Distributor screens are vital in ensuring efficient media retention and uniform flow distribution within these systems.
Wedge Wire Collector/Distributor System
Wedge wire collector/distributor systems are critical components in a wide array of water and wastewater treatment processes, including ion exchange units, media filters, sand filters, carbon vessels, and clay filters.
Collector/Distributor screens are vital in ensuring efficient media retention and uniform flow distribution within these systems.
Collector/Distributor screen systems generally consist of a network of wedge wire screen laterals connected to either a central hub or a header pipe. Their design allows for effective media retention, preventing loss during operation and backwashing, which is essential for optimal performance in various filtration and separation applications.
1. Hub Lateral Systems: Ideal for smaller diameter filters and vertical vessels, hub lateral systems feature screen laterals radiating from a central hub. These can be designed with multiple tiers for enhanced collection or distribution.
2. Header Lateral Systems: Designed for larger diameter filters, header lateral systems utilize a central header pipe with laterally connected wedge wire screens. They can be augmented with a perforated pipe distributor to improve backwash distribution and increase structural strength.
These cylinders can be configured for either radial flow (outside to inside) with wires running radially on the exterior, or axial flow (inside to outside) with wires positioned axially on the interior.
Functional Classification
Wedge wire collector/distributor systems are broadly classified based on their installation position and function within the tank:
Hub Lateral Assemblies: Primarily used at the top or bottom of the tank to distribute influent or collect effluent at the equipment outlet.
Header Lateral Assemblies: Typically positioned in the middle section of the tank to ensure even distribution of liquids and prevent media escape during operation.
Both hub and header lateral assemblies are available in various configurations, including radial and fishbone designs, tailored to specific application requirements. Customized designs with varying main pipe diameters and lateral quantities are also available.

Hub Radial Lateral Assemblies
Hub radial lateral assemblies are a cost-effective solution for smaller vertical vessels and are typically mounted at either the top or bottom. Their versatile design allows them to function as both a collector during down-flow service and a distributor during backwash cycles. For counter-current flow systems, where the inlet is located at the bottom of the vessel, the assembly's arrangement is reversed, with the distributor positioned at the bottom and the collector at the top. To enhance performance, the wedge wire screen can be reinforced with a perforated pipe base for high-pressure applications or designed to ensure even flow distribution across the entire screen area.
